Value stream mapping (VSM) adds value to manufacturing processes

1. Purpose of VSM

Identify and reduce “waste” in value streams to increase efficiency.

2. Keep it lean

Increase productivity by creating leaner operations which in turn reduces waste and quality problems.

3. Types of waste

Faster or slower than optimal pace, double-handling and excessive movement, poor layout and/or overabundance of inventory.

4. Types of operations

1) Non-value adding operations (NVA) like long wait times, 2) Necessary but non-value adding (NNVA) such as steps needed but not efficient, 3) Value-adding (VA) or most efficient.
